How big a system do you need?
Two numbers decide it: how much water your household uses, and how hard that water is. Slide to estimate — if you're between sizes, go bigger.
Sizing calculator
Daily demand = people × 75 gal × hardness (gpg). On well water, add ~4 gpg per 1 ppm of iron.
What counts as hard?
Most U.S. homes with hard water land in the 7–15 gpg range. A test kit or lab test tells you hardness, iron, and pH — three numbers, and the right model is usually obvious.
| Slightly hard | 1–3.5 gpg | Minimal softening needed |
| Moderately hard | 3.5–7 gpg | Softening recommended |
| Hard | 7–10.5 gpg | Strongly recommended |
| Very hard | 10.5+ gpg | High-capacity system |
